The Tennant Creek Public Library is a free service provided by the Barkly Regional Council. Residents and visitors to Tennant Creek are welcome to make use of the library services.

The library is a central hub for community members and travellers. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing environment to read, catch up on the news, study or bring the kids in for some fun in the playroom.

  • What can I borrow?

    The library contains a variety of audio books, paperback books & DVDs, just to name a few items.


    The library has a loan limit of 15 items for permanent members. 

  • What is required to become a member?

    Please speak with our friendly library staff for information on becoming a member of our library.


    You’ll need to bring an ID and proof of residence in Tennant Creek, such as a rates notice.

  • Temporary Membership

    Temporary Membership is available to the public but conditions will apply. Please contact the library for more details. 

  • eResources are available via the BorrowBox app

    eBooks, eAudibooks and ePress(Magazines) are available to all members for free via the BorrowBox app. Please contact the library for more information to set up your account.

Library Services


Computer Access & Wi-Fi:

The library offers a suite of document processing programs and high-speed internet, accessible either via one of our own desktop computers or with your own device using Wi-Fi.


Printing, Scanning and Laminating:

  • The Library can print & scan up to A4 sized paper. Just see staff at the service desk.
  • B&W; Printing is charged at a rate of $1 per page
  • Colour printing is charged at a rate of $2 per page
  • Laminating is charged per page at a rate of $5 per A4 page and $7 per A3 page
  • Scanning can be done either directly to a USB or we can forward it to your email at no charge.


Fax Services are no longer available, due to the phase-out of this technology. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Inter-Library Loans
If our Library does not have the book you are after we can request it from another library in the Northern Territory.

The library hosts a variety of community programs for patrons of all ages. The library programs are advertised on the BRC Website and Facebook account, and the library’s (monthly) newsletter.

Library Fees


There are charges for overdue books, videos, DVDs and CDs.

Please note: All Fees are endorsed by Barkly Regional Council

Overdue Item Cost
Books $1.00 for each day overdue
DVDs $1.00 for each day overdue

Please note: 

  • All items loaned out must be returned within the loan period, to avoid being charged for overdue / replacement item[s]
  • The above charges will commence on the first day the item is not returned and is charged to your account daily, until the item is returned. If re-loaning out, you must bring the item back to the library first, so the item condition can be assessed and the re-loan can be registered in our system.

FAQs

  • What time is the Library open?

    Our opening hours are Monday to Friday:

    10am-1pm and 2pm-5:30pm (Closed between 1pm and 2pm for Lunch)

    Saturday: 9am - 12pm

    We are closed on Sundays and Public Holidays

  • Does the Library have Wi-Fi?

    Yes! The library has both PCs connected to the internet and high speed Wi-Fi. Members can access these services free of charge. Non-members will need to pay a small fee, charged at $5 per 30 minutes and $8 per 1 hour


    All sessions are capped at 2 hours per day, to ensure fair use for all patrons


    Please note: Wi-Fi is currently unavailable 

  • What do I need to do to become a Library member if I live in Tennant Creek?

    Becoming a member is easy. All we need is some photo ID, proof of residency and a few minutes of your time to fill out the membership application. It takes us about 5 minutes to process your application. Then you are ready to go. 

  • Can I still join if I'm only visiting Tennant Creek?

    You can sign up for a Temporary Membership if you are in town for a short time. You will need to show photo ID and provide a $50 cash security deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay provided all borrowed items are returned in good condition. 

  • How much does it cost to sign up?

    Becoming a member is entirely FREE for local residents. Temporary members are required to submit a $50.00 refundable cash deposit

  • How much can I borrow?

    Local Resident Members can have up to fifteen (15) items on their account at any given time. Temporary Members can have five (5) on loan. 

  • What can I borrow?

    Members can choose from our wide array of Books, Audiobooks, Graphic Novels, DVDs or Magazines, and access to eResources via the BorrowBox app.


    The BorrowBox App allows access to eBooks, Audiobooks and ePress (magazines). 

  • How long can I borrow something for?

    DVDs have a one (1) week loan period.

    Books, Audiobooks, and Magazines have a six (6) week loan period.

    If you need an item for longer, contact the library before the due date to request a renewal. A DVD will be extended another week, a book another six (6) weeks. 

  • Can I browse the books even if I'm not a Library member?

    Of course. While you can't take any item home, you can enjoy a relaxing read inside the library, in comfort. We have plenty of comfortable seating for your convenience, while undertaking your literary adventure.
