Situated in the eastern central region of the Northern Territory, The Barkly Region is the second largest Local Government Area in Australia and the fourth largest in the world.
The golden heart of Australia in Tennant Creek NT, is part of the Barkly Region and is the primary hub for the Barkly. The region features many iconic, panoramic landscapes that can be accessed from Tennant Creek.
The Barkly Regional Council was established in 2008 and its area covers 7 communities (2 regional towns and 5 remote communities). The Barkly's local government area is over 320,000km2 , Making it one of the largest local government footprints in Australia. The estimated population of the Barkly Regional council, as stated in the 2021 Census is 6,316
The Barkly Regional Council employs an average of 200 staff across 7 communities (2 towns and 5 remote communities), of whom 60% are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and is committed to delivering services for residents of the region. The Coordination of all services and the administration of governance, finance, funding agreements, program management and human resourcing is undertaken centrally from our Tennant Creek Offices.
