Nominations for Barkly Citizen of the Year Awards are now open
The Barkly Citizen of the Year Awards are proudly presented by the Australia Day Council of Northern Territory and administered by the Barkly Regional Council. The awards acknowledge citizens who make our community stronger and beyond through their achievements and contributions to different areas. So,
Do you know someone tirelessly bringing advancements and impactful benefits for our community and beyond?
CATEGORIES
Four award categories are available this year.
Citizen of the Year
This accolade is presented to someone who has exceptionally contributed to the community through their outstanding and resourceful services over the years.
Young Citizen of the Year
This award recognises individuals aged 25 years or younger on 26 January 2025 for their excellence and inspiration in their fields and in the community.
Senior of the Year
This award celebrates the contributions of aged citizens in the Barkly Region who are dedicated to sharing their skills and experiences with the community and becoming inspirational models.
Volunteer of the Year
This award honours individuals/groups serving as volunteers for their incredible dedication and community services.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- To be eligible, the person must be an Australian Citizen.
- Age: Age requirements differ across award categories.
Citizen of the Year: Nominees must be 30+ years before 26 January 2025
- Young Citizen of the Year: Nominees must be over 16 and under 30 years old before 26 January 2025
- Senior of the Year: Nominees must be over 65 before 26 January 2025
- Volunteer of the Year: Nominees must be over 16 before 26 January 2025
- One nomination is sufficient for an individual to be considered.
- A person must be nominated by another person to be considered for an Award. Self-nominations are not accepted.
- Nominees should reside or work principally within the Barkly Regional Council region.
- Awards may be granted posthumously in recognition of recent achievements.
- Unsuccessful nominees may be nominated in future years.
- A couple or partnership with equal standing for the achievement or contribution may be recognised in an individual category.
- Sitting members of State, Federal, and Local Government are not eligible.
- Nominations must be apolitical.
- Individuals can be recognised in one category only; if they cross over multiple categories, a decision needs to be made on which category they will be awarded in.
- Awardees from previous years can be nominated for outstanding continued community contribution or involvement in a different initiative.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Nominees must demonstrate:
- An extraordinary achievement in enhancing community engagement
- A significant contribution to the local community.
- Demonstrated leadership on a community issue, resulting in the improvement of community life.
- An innovative initiative that has brought positive change and added value to community life.
- Inspiring qualities as a role model for the community.
- Free risk placing the Award Program or Barkly Regional Council’s reputation into disrepute.
HOW TO HELP US ACKNOWLEDGE THE UNSUNG HEROES IN OUR COMMUNITY

2. Mail the completed paper form to:
