Local residents pulled out all the stops to make sure Tennant Creek shines brightly this Christmas.
Over the weekend cars drove around town to marvel at the incredible displays in front of homes, shops and along streets.
A posse of judges, ranging in age from four to 53, were also out and about delighting in the strings of fairy lights, flashing Christmas trees, twinkling Santa Clauses, nativity scenes, colourful kangaroos, dancing snowballs and glow-in-the-dark mushrooms and presents.
The team had been invited by Barkly Regional Council to take up the near impossible task of choosing winners for the Tennant Creek Christmas Lights Competition.
Lengthy and heated discussions were held over two homes in particular – the spectacular light show at 39 Thompson Street and the cheeky display at 6 Ranedo Court.
Decisions were still contested late into Sunday evening but the younger fraternity held fast in their determination to name 6 Ranedo Court (Helen Marsh and family) as the winner with the Thompson Street entry (Eric Blankenspoor) a close second.
First prize for Best Street went to Ranedo Court with Little Rippers winning the Best Shop Front entry and Bonnie Baby Clothes coming second.
Sponsored by Councillor Hal Ruger, first and second prizes are $300 and $200 respectively with the street entry winner to be shared amongst participating homes.
As only one street entered the competition this year, the judges decided on a Special Mention Prize of $200 for 15 Tinkarli camp (Judith Anderson) for the family’s extraordinary effort.
A Council spokesperson said the entries this year were of the highest quality and showed the true spirit of Christmas.
“Everyone needs to be congratulated as you could tell people put in a lot of hard work and hours to make their homes and this town shine so brightly,” he said.
First and second place winners can collect their prize money from Barkly Regional Council head office, 41 Peko Road, either Friday, 18 December or Monday, 21 December.
