Event: International Women's Day
The women of Tennant Creek invite you to celebrate with a march down the main street.
On: Tuesday, 8 March 2016
As part of the global International Women’s Day
(IWD) festivities, local women are celebrating the actual day with a march
down the main street from Nyinkka Nyunyu to Peko Park.
Everyone wishing to take part in the parade is
asked to gather at Nyinkka Nyunyu Car Park from 8am with a prompt 8.30am start.
Participants then walk down the inside lane of Paterson Street (northbound) to
Peko Park with songs by and about powerful women blaring out of a boom box.
Traffic management will be in place.
Once at Peko Park organisers will ask participants
to let go of a balloon in the IWD colours of purple, white and green to show
their commitment to taking action to accelerate gender parity.
A spokesperson for the IWD Committee, which received a grant from the NT
Government’s Office of Women’s Policy to hold events locally, said they chose
to have a parade down Paterson Street to celebrate the strength, resilience and
achievements of all local women as well as the long journey ahead.
“This is a time not only to reflect on how far
women have come around the world and in the region, but how far we have to go,”
she said.
