Event: Desert Harmony Festival Opening Ceremony: Day 1

See a different side to Tennant Creek when the community gets together to celebrate festival time.

On: Friday, 31 July 2015

Come and immerse yourself in the rich cultural diversity of the Barkly region for the 26th Desert Harmony 2015.
Held from 31 July to 5 August in the heart of the NT, Tennant Creek, visitors and locals alike can experience music, visual arts, stories, food, cultural activities, parades, film and dance.
This year's festival, hosted by Barkly Regional Arts, will have a strong disability theme, with the tagline ‘Let NDIS be light’.
Local artist Dion Beasley’s ‘Little Boys’ series was the inspiration for this year’s logo design, created by Alice Springs designer, Elliat Rich, with desert landscapes and colour palettes inspired by artist Lindy Brodie.
The Festival has a strong emphasis on encouraging people with disability to connect with their community and enjoy positive activities.
Tonight is the opening ceremony at Nyinnka Nyunyu at 5.30pm followed by the Marngrook Footy Show with Stronger Sisters at Purkiss Reserve @ 6.30pm and the Team of Life where sport, theatre, dance and music meet head-on in this uplifting new work from Melbourne dance theatre company KAGE. Other highlights include Hunters and Collectors Art Trail, BAMFest, yoga, the Dirty Word Open Mic event, Caravan Burlesque, Djuki Mala Dancers, arts markets, and the Magic Flute by Opera Australia. Watch this space!
