“Welcome – Apijirra” to the Barkly Shire website, designed to inform readers about our region, services and activities.

The Barkly Shire Council came into existence on the 1st July, 2008 following a reform of Local Government resulting in the creation of eight new shire councils to cover most of the unincorporated area of the Northern Territory and combining the many smaller town and community councils.

The Barkly Shire covers an area 323,514km²  the second largest local government area in the world, and has a resident population of 8,137 (ABS – NT at a Glance 2011)

The Barkly Shire Council acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners.
